Abstract

Abstract Hypertension is classified in one of silent killer diseases or unexpectedly human’s killing disease. Cucumber extract supposedly can lower high blood pressure in hypertensive patients if given by mouth 2 times a day. This study aimed to identify the effect of giving cucumber extracts to the decrease blood pressure in patients with hypertension in the elderly Posyandu in Prumpon Sukodono Village District. Design used quasy-experimental, with non equivalent control group design. The population is elderly who suffer from hypertension. The sample are 20 elderly, selected by non-probability sampling approach to purposive sampling. Research uses the blood pressure observation sheet instruments. Data were analyzed using t-test. The study obtained the average blood pressure which was given cucumber extract was decreased by 13 mmHg for systolic blood pressure, while 7 mmHg for diastolic blood pressure. For the group which not given cucumber extract increased by 2 mmHg in systolic blood pressure and no change in diastolic blood pressure. The results obtained t-test p = 0.000 and p = 0031. It means that there are differences in rates of systolic and diastolic blood pressure between experimental and control groups after the intervention of cucumber extract. Implications of this study is cucumber extract may lower blood pressure in hypertensive patients. So that's good for elderly to consume cucumber extract as one of the non-pharmacological treatment to reduce hypertension.
