Abstract

Poor quality of life in elderly people such as decreasing body function, not getting health access, no old-age insurance, no social support from family or friends can trigger depression. The objective of this study was to identify the correlation between depression level and sleep quality among elderly. This study used correlational analytic. Samples were taken using simple random sampling, with 31 elderly people in Panti Werdha Mojopahit Mojokerto. Data collection was undertaken using Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire sheet . Data were analyzed with Spearman Rank test with significance level of 0,05. Results showed that 16 elderly people who did not have depression, 10 elderly had good sleep quality (62.5%) and 6 elderly had poor quality, while 15 elderly with mild depression all had poor sleep quality (100%). This study found that there was a significant correlation between depression level and sleep quality among elderly (ρ = 0.000). A holistic nursing care plan that minimizes the underlying causes of depression in the elderly, developing adaptive coping and social support can help the elderly adjust to the underlying causes of depression.
