Abstract

Background : The aging process in eldery cause a variety of mental health problems, one that often appear is depressed. Depression continues to be a serious mental health problem because it’s often ignored. Objective : The research purposes to analyzing the effectiveness of art painting therapy to decrease depression of elderly in Griya Lansia Santo Yoseph Surabaya. Method : The research design using pre experimental with the draft one group pre test-post test design. The population are 152 elderly. Sampling technique uses purposive sampling obtainable 23 elderly depression. The independent variable is art painting therapy and dependent variable is decreased levels of depression. The instrument uses Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI) questionnaire with intervention art painting therapy as much as 8 session since 2 months. Result : Data were analysed using Wilcoxon test to find the difference of depression level before and aftergiven art painting therapy. The level of significant obtainable ρ value = 0,001 (ρ < 0,05).The implications of this research there are influenced that significant between giving art painting therapy can decrease depression of elderly in Griya Lansia Surabaya.
